Billing (PBM)

Raytio's Billing (PBM) capability manages subscriptions, plan changes, usage-based charges, invoice generation, and plan-based access. It connects pricing from PCM with customer billing in FAR so tenants can sell recurring or metered services.

Billing Model Overview

Billing (PBM) is built around billing subscriptions on one side and usage events with aggregation on the other. Both paths converge at billing transactions, which link subscription activity to invoice generation. Understanding how these pieces fit together is the key to understanding how Raytio handles recurring and metered billing.

Billing Subscriptions

A billing subscription represents a recurring billing agreement between a tenant and a customer. It defines who is being billed, when billing cycles occur, and what the current subscription status is.

Billing Transactions

Billing subscription line transactions record the link between a subscription line and the invoice line generated from it. Each transaction represents one billing event for one subscription line in one billing period.

Overrides and Trials

Entitlements are normally derived from Billing (PBM) subscriptions: what a tenant or customer has purchased determines what they can use. Overrides allow administrators to manually grant or restrict plan capabilities outside the standard subscription terms. This is used for trials, promotional access, custom deals, and corrective adjustments.

Plan Capabilities and Entitlements

Entitlements are the access and limit controls produced by Billing (PBM). When a tenant or customer subscribes to a plan, the subscription determines both what is billed and what the subscriber can use.

Quotas and Limits

Numeric entitlements, or quotas, are plan limits managed by Billing (PBM). They limit how many of a particular resource a tenant or customer can create. The platform counts existing active resources and compares the count to the resolved limit before allowing a new resource to be created.

Upgrading Plans

When a subscription changes — whether it is an upgrade, downgrade, or modification — Billing (PBM) automatically updates the affected plan capabilities. This page explains what causes an update and how changes propagate through the billing layers.

Usage Aggregation Rules

Usage event aggregation rules define how raw usage events are transformed into billable quantities. Each rule specifies which events to match, which field to extract, and which formula to apply.

Usage Events and Aggregation

Billing (PBM) supports usage-based (metered) billing through a pipeline of raw event ingestion, aggregation, and billing. This page explains how raw usage events flow through the system and are transformed into billable quantities.
